چکیده

A two-dimensional effective model for the semi-soft elastic behavior of nematic elastomers is derived in the thin film limit. The model is used to investigate numerically the force-stretch curves, the deformed shape, and to resolve the local patterns in the director orientation in a stretching experiment. From the force-stretch curves we recover the two critical stretches which mark the transition from hard to soft and back to hard response. We present an analytical model for their dependence on the aspect ratio of the sample, and compare with numerical results. PACS numbers: 62.20.-x,61.30.-v,61.41.+e

Commentary on “ Mechanical properties of mono - domain side chain nematic elastomers ” by P . Martinoty

We discuss the rheology experiments on nematic elastomers by Martinoty et al. in the light of theoretical models for the long-wavelength low-frequency dynamics of these materials. We review these theories and discuss how they can be modified to provide a phenomenological description of the nonhydrodynamic frequency regime probed in the experiments. Moreover, we review the concepts of soft and s...

Numerical Study of Liquid Crystal Elastomers by Mixed Finite Element Methods

The goal of this article is the application of the finite element method to study and simulate the unique behaviors of liquid crystal elastomers, such as semi-soft elasticity and stripe-domain instability. We start with an energy functional that consists of the Bladon-Warner-Terentjev stored energy of the liquid crystal elastomer, the Oseen-Frank energy of liquid crystals, plus Lagrange multipl...

Negative Poisson's ratio and semisoft elasticity of smectic-C liquid-crystal elastomers.

Models of smectic-C liquid-crystal elastomers predict that they can display soft elasticity, in which the shape of the elastomer changes at no energy cost. The amplitude of the soft mode and the accompanying shears are dependent on the orientation of the layer normal and the director with respect to the stretch axis. We demonstrate that in some geometries the director is forced to rotate perpen...

Soft elasticity in smectic elastomers.

We investigate the soft elastic modes of smectic elastomers, that is shape change without energy cost. We use a microscopic model for their nonlinear elasticity, similar to those used for nematic elastomers. We consider two different phases of smectic elastomer; the biaxial smectic A for a simple illustration, and smectic C phases which are of great practical significance. We show that only one...

Nematic fluctuations and semisoft elasticity in liquid-crystal elastomers.

We give a detailed theory of nematic fluctuations in liquid-crystal elastomers (LCEs) and calculate relaxation rates as obtained by dynamic light scattering (DLS). In ideal LCEs, a nematic state is formed by a spontaneous orientational symmetry breaking of an isotropic state, manifesting itself in an existence of a coupled director-shear soft mode (Goldstone mode). The relaxation rate of the so...
